Researcher Dan Cohen was one of several first experts to design soil seed banks. During the 1960s, concentrating on desert annuals subject to very irregular rainfall, he formulated population-dynamics models that proposed that a reserve of some fraction of seed while in the soil was important for the plants to prevent community extinction.
